Dr. Michael O. Garcia to conduct lecture series

Dr. Michael O. Garcia, a Professor of Geology at the University of Hawaii, will be conducting a two-day lecture series, starting on March 20, 2006, on the anatomy of a volcano (based on the results of the Hawaiian Scientific Drilling Project) and on giant volcanic landslides in Hawaii, at the UP-NIGS Cities Service - Nido Audiovisual Room. He will also lead a fieldwork to Mayon Volcano and Irosin Caldera after the lectures. The final details of his visit will be announced later.
This will be Dr. Garcia's second visit to the Institute. He was at UP-NIGS last November, as a participant of the AGU Chapman Conference organized by Dr. Alfredo Mahar Lagmay, and of the post-Chapman Pinatubo trek organized by Dr. Sandra Catane.

Magma Systems launches official website

The Magma Systems Academic Group of the National Institute of Geological Sciences, University of the Philippines, proudly launches its new official website that showcases the group's contributions to the field of magma-related studies. The website features member profiles, relevant links and downloads, as well as a photo gallery, which aims to entice young people to pursue graduate studies in volcanology, mineralogy and magmatic processes.
Designed and coded by Allan A. Mandanas, one of the group's members, the Magma Systems website has a clean layout for easy navigation, and employs special scripts for a more enjoyable browsing experience.
